Post History and Highlights

Our History

In the late 1970s, a group of Veterans in Spring Hill, Florida, recognized the growing community’s need for its own American Legion Post. With support from local Veterans, the group petitioned the American Legion, and in 1981, a charter was granted for what became American Legion Post 186, Spring Hill, Florida; Department of Florida. The Post started with 57 members and was located on County Line Road, with Frank Carpenter serving as its first Commander.

As more Veterans, particularly from WWII and Korea, retired to Florida, Post 186 experienced rapid growth. By 1993, the membership had outgrown the original space, prompting a move to a larger facility on Route 19 (Commercial Way). However, the continued expansion of Spring Hill and increasing membership once again required a larger venue. In 2001, the Post relocated to its current home on Route 50 (Cortez Blvd.), a move significantly influenced by Charles E. Murray, for whom the Post is named.

Under the leadership of its Commanders and officers, Post 186 has grown from its original 57 members to over 1,000 members today, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the Hernando County community. The Post is widely recognized for its charitable contributions, including support for Veterans, youth programs, and individuals in need.

Today, Charles E. Murray American Legion Post 186 stands as a beacon of the Legion’s values, showcasing its commitment to serving Veterans and the community while continuing to grow and make a positive impact in Hernando County and beyond.
